Post 1 – Thoughts on NFL Sporting Combine and NFL Network
To all of my sport-phobic friends our there – a report from SportsLand: NFL scouting combine (drills and tests to analyze promising choices for the draft coming up in April) has been televised this weekend – NFL network is one more reason I’m really glad to have ditched Time Warner recently. Anyway – the combine is fascinating. The drills test not just brute physical skill, but rather how quickly these young, gifted kids can adapt, integrate new information and specific challenges to body control. In short, the tests challenge physical intelligence, and ability to improvise, focus, and adjust to adverse conditions – not just raw speed, power and quickness. Always interesting to me when the physical forms such an apt metaphor life’s larger challenges, and the skills necessary to thrive. Raw skill & god given talent don’t hurt – but most of sport, like life, is about control, awareness, adaptation, and smarts – the stuff that goes on between your ears.
